The discipline Camille Fournier and Ian Nowland lay out in Platform Engineering: A Guide for Technical, Product, and People Leaders did not stop applying when the workloads became agents — if anything, it matters more. Before the context layer and the workflows, get the frame right.

That word — leverage — is the whole point. The work of a few engineers on a platform team reduces the work of the entire organization: it makes application engineers more productive and eliminates duplicated effort. An agentic platform earns its keep the same way, or it is just an expensive demo.

The book's subtitle is its thesis: a platform is technical, product, and people work simultaneously. Get one wrong and the platform stalls — a beautifully engineered tool nobody adopts, or a beloved idea that falls over in production.

A platform is a product, not a project
The single most important idea in the book is also the one teams most often skip. A platform has customers — your own engineers — a roadmap, and a success metric that is adoption, not lines shipped. Projects end; products are maintained, evolved, and held accountable to the people who depend on them. The moment you treat an internal platform as a one-time delivery, it starts to rot.

Knowing your customer is not a metaphor here — it is the prerequisite. The developer persona is who every roadmap decision answers to.
Curated, not just self-service
The word the book keeps returning to is curated. A platform is self-service — you do not file a ticket and wait — but it is not a pile of primitives either. "The cloud" is not a platform; it is an overwhelming array of offerings. The platform is the opinionated, paved road built on top: the common path is one command with sane defaults, and the parts you could get wrong are already decided for you.
The tension between curation and flexibility has a name in the book — "building blocks, not batteries included." A batteries-included platform that wires everything together end to end becomes too coupled to evolve; foundational, composable blocks with escape hatches let trusted teams unblock themselves.

A golden path that cannot be left becomes a cage, and engineers route around cages. The art is making the paved road so obviously the path of least resistance that almost nobody needs the hatch — while leaving it there for the cases that do.
Buy the commodity, build what is yours
The oldest platform decision is build versus buy, and the rule is the durable one: buy what is commodity, build what differentiates you. AI does not change the rule, only where the line falls. You rent the frontier model and the managed vector store; you do not rebuild your observability stack or your code host. But the grounding, the gates, and the golden paths encode how your team works — and nobody sells those.
Measure it like a product
Because a platform is a product, you measure it like one — and the vanity metrics (agents deployed, lines generated) tell you nothing. The metrics that matter are about the customers.

Put trust ahead of adoption
You do not get adoption by decree. The book is blunt that "standardization via authority isn't enough" — you earn the move by making the new path good enough that the old one withers, and by sequencing rollout by risk tolerance: onboard less-critical use cases first, gather the operational data, and use that trust to win the next, more critical tranche.

Demonstrate leverage on a real, painful task. A mandate produces malicious compliance and shadow tooling, not converts.

When a team routes around you, sometimes they’re right. Let good ideas prove out, then merge the ones with real demand.
The one tension AI adds
There is a single tension an agentic platform adds to the classic list, and it is the one that matters most: a platform that ships code faster also ships bad code faster, unless quality is engineered in. The job is to push the speed-and-quality frontier outward — more throughput and fewer regressions. Three disciplines keep that honest — grounding so agents hallucinate less, evaluation so "it feels better" becomes a measured number, and accountability so every action stays reviewable and reversible. The Overview treats this tension as the spine of the whole section; the point here is only that it survives the shift to agents.
The model under the platform will keep changing, faster than any book can track. The discipline of building platforms — product mindset, curated self-service, build-versus-buy, adoption as engineering — does not. Learn it once and it transfers to whatever the workload becomes next.
